Coimbra Group
Founded in 1985 and formally constituted by Charter in 1987, the Coimbra Group is an association of long-established European multidisciplinary universities of high international standard. The Coimbra Group is committed to creating special academic and cultural ties in order to promote, for the benefit of its members, internationalisation, academic collaboration, excellence in learning and research, and service to society. It is also the purpose of the Group to influence European educational policy and to develop best practice through mutual exchange of experience. The Coimbra Group was among the earliest associations to develop fully-fledged Erasmus Programme activities, and has decades of experience in the exchange of researchers, teachers and students.
Coimbra Group member universities can appoint staff members to represent their institutions in the Coimbra Group Task Forces.
The Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Task Force (ACP TF) of the Coimbra Group gathers academic and administrative staff members of Coimbra Group Universities who have extensive experience in development cooperation and academic relations with Africa.
The Task Force runs a number of academic activities on a regular basis like Summer Schools on Development for PhD students from Europe and the South and a Scholarship Programme for short research stays for young researchers from Africa. Furthermore, it coordinates the Coimbra Group Development Master Initiative, which aims to provide students with the best possible entry into contemporary Development Studies by linking a number of programmes of prominent European universities. Students are given the possibility to migrate between the participating universities in order to gain specialist knowledge in specific fields and in order to experience alternative approaches to development. Students can thus explore different cultural backgrounds already during the university studies. Each of the European programmes also has its own links to partner universities in countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, thus opening diverse windows for students for internships and thesis research.
The Coimbra Group is participating in the Advisory Board of the LEMONOC project thanks to the extensive experience of the members of the Coimbra Group ACP Task Force in academic cooperation and mobility with the South. It will provide feedback on the implementation of the project throughout its various stages. Coimbra Group member universities will in turn benefit from the exchange of knowledge and practice with the project partners.
